Using Graffiti as an interesting background

Updated: Jun 5, 2020

The #Custardfactory in #Digbeth #Birmingham #UK is a unique experience and according to @VisitBirmingham "Set in 15 acres of beautifully restored Victorian Factories, just five minutes walk from the Bullring, it is the heart of Birmingham’s buzzing creative and digital district. Custard Factory is a creative hub home to many independent shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and the Mockingbird Cinema."

What isn't clearly explained is that this area is rich with a diverse range of graffiti that is not found anywhere else in the Birmingham area. This could be argued but I'll leave that for someone else to do.

As a #background for photography, or even as a subject itself, this area and the surrounding streets are full of #inspiring #graffiti for the #photographer or even the passer by. So where else would I go and do an urban shoot with the talented Arianna? As the meerkats say, Simples.

It must be stressed that part of the Custard Factory has a car park situated underneath railway arches which are also covered in colourful and interesting graffiti. So, the car park it was to start off with.

Moving around to the centre of the car park gives an even more impressive view and Arianna rocked the area with her posing.

Arianna had said that she had been bravely dealing with issues that had been affecting her emotional well-being and this picture was taken to show that on the outside everything seems fine but there is always something over your shoulder watching and waiting. The two graffiti images at the back of Arianna were chosen to portray the nagging doubts.

We had a walk through the car park to Floodgate Street where around the corner is another set of graffiti images (well there would be wouldn't there!) and we found a blue section that lit up Arianna well.

As the morning was getting a wee bit cold and boy does that wind whip through those streets, we took a little break and ventured back into the Custard Factory for some respite from the wind and also to take advantage of the other works of art.

And just to mix it up a little, Arianna donned a wig to give a finale that only she could give!

So, a little bit of the Custard Factory caught in the shoot with Arianna.

Hope you enjoyed it.
